Acknowledged as the unsurpassed master of Thumri Tradition Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was one of the greatest classical vocalists of the 20th century. The Ustad’s melodious voice had an effortless range and style which gripped the listeners. Born in Lahore in 1901 as the son of Khan Saheb Ali Bux Ghulam Ali’s musical gifts were evident at an early age. His father was a well known vocalist and Sarangi player while his uncle Kale Khan was renowned musician

Bade Ghulam Ali Khan’s training in music started from his home. He trained rigorously under his uncle kale Khan for 10 years. Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan belonged to the Patiala Gharana of Hindustani classical music. He was a great exponent of Thumri and enriched it with his own innovations. He introduced the now well known Punjab-ang of thumri for the rare perfection and popularity that he brought to the Punjab ang he has been rightly called the king of light classical music. But his approach to Khayal was essentially traditional. He recorded several Khayals and Thumris which are still immensely popular. Ustad Bade Gulam Ali Khan Passed away 1968 leaving behind a priceless and glorious heritage of music. Among his many contributions to Hindustani music the outstanding one is that he opened the eyes of contemporary musicians and music lovers to the prime importance of voice culture and voice modulation and the supreme value of emotion in music.
