Book Description
About the CD

Caudadanapura is a village of Karnataka in South India, where all facets of Indian civilisation, encompassing religion, art and poetry are exemplified in an exquisite temple, of 12th-13th century. Dedicated to an udbhava – linga “spontaneously born” Linga named Muktesvara, it was initially consecrated in the faith of the Kalamukha movement of Saivism. Then a saint named Sivadeva, inspired by the great reformist Basava, sanctified the place by his ascetic and heroic vows. His fame spread far and wide, being recorded in inscriptions composed in medieval Kannada, in a very poetical form. These inscriptions have a great historical importance, as testimonies of the crucial period of transition from the dominance of the Kalamukha faith to the prevalence of the Virasaiva movement. They are also literary monuments, matching the architectural and sculptural beauty of the temple.

Muktesvara temple is a 12th century temple, located in a small village “Caudadanapura” in North Karanataka. It is a jewel of architecture and sculpture. Its inscriptions are masterpieces of medival Kannada poetry. This CD-ROM has been developed with UNDP help in collaboration with P.S. Filliozat and V. Filliozat.
