The state of Odisha has carved a niche for itself as a land of great repositories of fascinating art and craft now found in various museums. The beginning of museums in the state is a 20th century phenomenon when the first museum of Odisha was established in the year 1903 at Baripada and the second one at Khiching in1922. Over a period of more than a Century, Odisha has acquired a number of museums of different varieties and types multipurpose such as the Odisha State Museums and museum of very special category like that of the Pearl museum of Central Institute of Fresh Water and Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar and the Oryza Museum of Central Rice Research Institute at Cuttack.

Introduction
Museums preserve a nation's heritage. They make it accessible to large sections of people. They form an important aid to our country's cultural regeneration. Museums collect and care for objects of scientific, artistic or historical importance and make them available for public viewing through exhibits. However, the word "Museum" is originally derived from the Greek word "Mouseion", which denotes a place or temple dedicated to the muses with whom glorious events of past such as folk-art, music, poetry, history were associated. The muses are the virgin daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne who are nine in number and appear as beautiful maidens.

According to Compact Oxford English Dictionary museum means a building in which objects of interest or significance are stored and exhibited. The fundamental significance of the word museum like in the word itself. The very word is an acronym that explains the aims and objectives of the museum.
