Music pervades all nature and sound arouses our attention and affects our feelings quickly. The study of Indian Music is advantageous for a number of reasons. I have been contemplating with the idea of publishing various articles. The articles, extracts contained in the body of this book are a selection made from out of a number of articles contributed to various papers, seminars, journals and books on various occasions.
The first chapter is based on 'Music Education' delivered lecture at S.N.D.T. University, Mumbai in association with IMS, Baroda in the year 2003 on 22-23 Dec. It is an in-depth study of Music Education. Indian music is a melodic music. It is in the root of the Universe. Education is the Key for the development of the Society and Nation. Of late Music Education has got a Boost, it has spread far and wide.
The second chapter provides on over view of the composer duo Sadarang-Adarang. The Composer duo "Sadarang-Adarang" is super among the composer-musicians. Their compositions are popular not only in the field of classical music but in the field of film Music also.
The 3rd chapter is an essay on Raas. Mathura and Vrindawan resounds with music and dance, prepares for the performances and Raaslilas of Krishna and the Raas Dances. It is clearly divided into two sections, one the Raas dancers and other the Lilas, operatic plays revolving around the early life on Krishna. When the Raas begins, there are all the elements of Indian Dance.
Chapter 4 is fully based on my detailed study of UGC Minor Research project entitled 'Classical Music & its therapeutic aspects in Bihar State'. Ancient writers and medical authorities have dilated upon the power which music has of curing some of the ailments of humanity. I have presented some account of only healing power of music.
Chapter 5 is 'Thumari': The way it comes to us' Next to Khyal, Thumari is the most important form. There are so many views regarding the origin and development of Thumari. Now it's a very special and important form of semi classical music.
'Ragas in Indian Texts' is chapter 6. Wonderful gift as 'raga', we have in Indian Music. This melodic scheme is defined and explained in various ways in Indian Texts.
Chapter 7 describes Musical Folk Tales in Bihar'. There is a rich tradition of tales in Bihar. Bihar curves out its tradion and culture. Different kinds of folk tales are oral tradition, it's noted down is the chapter.
Chapter 8 coveres areas connected with Folk songs of Mithila. Mithila, the name of land belongs to the Puranic lore and it is a land full of folklore. Folklore is such an aspect of culture which explains people in total through folksongs, dances, tales, ballads, fairs, festivals, traditions etc. Its field is extensive. This land is famous for its musical heritage.
