About the Book The rise of the Mahāyāna Buddhist school almost synchronized with the composition of the first Prajñāpāramitā in the pre-Christian era. However the school did not rise to prominence till the advent of the two Mādhyamika giants Nägärjuna, and his chief disciple Aryadeva (2nd century AD.). It is the Mülamadhyamakakärikā (MMK), a masterly work of the former that eclipsed the earlier schools of Buddhism. In fact after the rise and spread of the doctrine of śūnyavāda propounded in MMK, the Buddhist thought became almost different from what it had been earlier. Even the roots of the subsequent development of the absolutist doctrine of the Upaniṣadic philosophy are traced to Nägarjuna's works. Such MMK, edited afresh by Christian Lindtner is presented to the world of scholars by the Adyar Library and Research Centre. Christian Lindtner is also preparing a compendium of twelve minor works of Nagarjuna. We will be happy to publish the same before long.

Foreword After a long life devoted to Oriental and Buddhist studies, the outstanding Dutch philologist Jan Willem de Jong passed away on 22 January 2000 in Canberra, at the age of 78. His doctoral dissertation from Leiden, Cinq Chapitres de la Prasannapada, contained the Tibetan version of five chapters (18-22), being a commentary on the magnum opus of Nagarjuna, the MMK, with an annotated French translation. It was published in Paris and remains a standard work to this day. In 1977, de Jong's edition of the Sanskrit text of the 27 chapters of the MMK itself was published in the Adyar Library Series as volume 109. Thanks to his having access to a hitherto unknown Nepalese manuscript of the Prasanna-padā, de Jong could corroborate emendations suggested by Louis de La Vallée Poussin (1903-13), or propose a few new readings. The textual critical notes were published by our late friend in the Indo-Iranian Journal 20 (1978, pp. 25-59, 217-52). There are further manuscripts in Berlin and Lhasa. By collating the extant Tibetan and Chinese versions of the MMK, further emendations were proposed by myself, and by the Japanese editor of the Buddhapālita, Akira Saito.

Preface Louis de La Vallée Poussin's edition of Nagarjuna's Müla-madhyamakakärikä-s together with Candrakīrti's Prasanna-padā appeared from 1903 to 1913 as volume IV of the Bibliotheca Buddhica (reprinted in 1970 by Biblio Verlag, Osnabruck). It is based upon three manuscripts, all three mediocre copies of an original which itself was not faultless. Moreover, the manuscripts present a number of identical lacunae. Nevertheless, with the help of the Tibetan transla-tion, de La Vallée Poussin was able to establish a text which made it possible to study this important work of Nagarjuna and Candrakīrti, although in quite a number of places the exact wording remained doubtful. Several years ago Professor Giuseppe Tucci was kind enough to put at my disposal a photocopy of a hitherto un-known Nepalese manuscript of the Prasannapada. On the basis of this manuscript it is possible either to corroborate the many emendations made by de La Vallée Poussin, or to propose new readings. Moreover, almost all passages, absent in the three manuscripts mentioned above, are to be found in it. Comparing this manuscript with de La Vallée Poussin's edition and the Tibetan translation, I prepared a long list of text-critical notes to be published in the Indo-Iranian Journal, vol. 20, 1978.
