About the Book Many biographies describe Nanak as a miraculous man, a Sufi (Mystic man in Islam), a follower of the Bhagati Movement, a Reformer, a Revolutionist, and some labeled him as the founder of Sikhism hybridization of Hinduism and Islam called "syncretism." Prof. Dr. Devinder Singh Chahal, an eminent scientist, discovered Nanak as the most intelligent freethinker right from his childhood when he refused to wear Janeo (a sacred thread) to become a disciple of Brahman. He traveled the whole of India, Tibet, and the Middle East to have discourses with mentors of Hindu and Muslim institutions. He was recognized as a Guru by his followers, Sikh Gurus. However, his Guru was Sabd. Besides, Prof Chahal discovered Nanak as a Natural Philosopher. Although he is considered the founder of Sikhism, Prof Chahal discovered that he is the founder of Sikhi (Enlightening philosophy universal having acceptability). His original and unique philosophy, called 'Nanakian Philosophy', has been discussed in Nanak and his Philosophy under different headings.

About the Author Professor Devinder Singh Chahal is a scientist of world fame who was a Professor and Head of the Department of Microbiology at the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India; as a Fulbright Fellow at the Department of Food Science and Chemical Engineering, MIT, Cambridge, Mass, USA; as a Visiting Scientist and Visiting Professor in the Department Biochemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada. He retired as a Professor of Microbiology from the Institute Armand-Frappier, Laval, Quebec, Canada, in 1996. He has published three books on Microbiology and many research articles in reputable journals and his research in the bioconversion of cellulosic wastes into useful products is known in the world. He established the Institute for Understanding Sikhism in 1999 and founded a journal, Understanding Sikhism: The Research Journal. He has Published 7 books and about a hundred articles based on logical and scientific interpretations of Bani in the Aadi Guru Granth Sahib. He was honored as one of the 100 Topmost Influential Sikhs of the World in 2012-2016, He was honored by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Amritsar, in 2004 during the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the compilation of the Aadi (Adi) Granth (Sikh (Scriptures) and by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, New Delhi, on Khalsa Fateh Divas, held at Red Fort, Delhi on March 8-9, 2014.

Acknowledgments I am grateful to Mr. Jessi Schel, a non-Sikh studying Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and an expert in English from New Zealand, for editing the first revision of Nanak and his Philosophy during 2016-217. Further work on revision remained untouched because of the operation of my spine at the lower back and neck, where the vertebrae were compressing my nerves leading to my legs and arms. The revision was again taken up in 2021. I am grateful to Dr. Sheena Sidhu, Staff Scientist, Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve, Stanford University, Woodside, CA, for editing the second revision of Nanak and his Philosophy. My special thanks to Dr. Kulbir Singh Thind for granting me permission to reproduce the Gurmukhi script in Unicode and its transliteration in the Roman alphabet throughout the book. The moral support from the Executive Committee of the Institute for Understanding Sikhism is highly appreciated.

Foreword That Guru Nanak has been relentlessly studied from a plethora of perspectives and presented as such to the Sikh world is perhaps an understatement. That there is a dearth of literature that takes a serious, deep, and systematic dive into the subject of Guru Nanak's thoughts and messages is yet another understatement. Devinder Singh Chahal's Nanak and his Philosophy is thus a refreshing contribution that would contribute to this lacuna in the body of knowledge pertaining to the teachings of Guru Nanak. Prof The Sikh world will have a fair share of critics who will be perturbed over the use of the term "philosopher" for Guru Nanak and the term "philosophy" to describe his teachings and messages. The apt response for such critics other than the suggestion that their critique is based on having little or no understanding of philosophy as an inquiry and Guru Nanak the person - is the request that they read this book and reevaluate their critique. In the simplest of terms, philosophy is an activity people undertake when they seek to understand fundamental truths about themselves, the world in which they live, and their relationships to the world and to each other. In scientific terms, it studies the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality and existence, especially when considered an academic discipline. So when Chahal uses the phrase "Nanak's Philosophy," the intent is to conduct a study of the theoretical basis of the wisdom and experiences of Guru Nanak. The phrase is thus used in the same way as academics use the phrase "the philosophy of science." Given Chahal's life-long profession as an academic in the field of natural sciences, it is expected that his contribution to the study of Guru Nanak, Sikhi, and Gurbani is unique because his framework of reference is derived from his own professional and academic experiences.
