In April 1997, Institute of Historical Studies, Calcutta celebrated the birth centenary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose by holding a two day seminar on various aspects of Netaji's personality and work. Altogether twelve papers were published in the first edition written by specialists from various disciplines of social science. On 14th February, 2009 the Institute held another seminar on the life and work of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in collaboration with Netaji Bhavana Manch, Kolkata. It also generated ten more papers throwing new light on many other aspects of Netaji's career.
We have therefore decided to join the two proceedings and bring out a single enlarged volume on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in Historical Perspective. We have to record with gratitude the support given by Dr. Purabi Ray, President of the Netaji Bhavana Manch for holding the second seminar. We also wish to thank all the contributors, past and present to this volume. M/s. Rupa & Co. has kindly agreed to publish the volume in view of its national importance.
Netaji has been a living icon of Indian history and contemporary India. In this present crisis of loss of values in life Netaji remains a role model for future generations. It is therefore necessary to reassess Netaji's life and achievements. The rainbow character of Netaji's activities are well brought out in this final collection and it is certain to be a big draw for the reading public.
