History of the National Institute of Nutrition and the modern history of nutrition research in India are almost inseparable. Looking at the Institute today, one would not assume that NIN was born over nine decades ago as it always appears contemporary and never senile. Starting as a one-room enquiry Unit in Conoor, Tamil Nadu in 1918 to almost a colossus of an entity today, the odyssey was incredible. Many milestones were crossed, many heights were scaled, many innovations were made, many laurels were achieved and of course many indelible foot prints were left on sands of time to show an illuminating path for generations to come.
Any institute, specially a Science Institute, they say should be built on the firm foundation of not only Science but also 'Art' - the art of putting the knowledge of science for the benefit of the community; the art of reaching the fruits of science for building a nation. We proudly can say this Institute has mastered not only the art of science but also the science of art. Not just science and art there is an additional dimension to this Institute, the heart'. The Institute has a large heart for the millions of malnourished, a heart to build a nutritionally healthy nation and a heart to make India a powerful nation endowed with strong manpower.
This book is an enthusiastic celebration of this historic Institute, which is the oldest in the fraternity of research Institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). In the absence of NIN, not just the nutrition science but also the medical and social research in this country would have been grossly undernourished. This is our tribute to the many scientists, technicians and staff who laid a firm foundation to India's premier research Institute.
We attempted to provide a bird's eye view of the genesis and the evolution of NIN with many interesting historical details. On top of that, we tried to interweave the historical vignettes with the very many contours that NIN took to keep its research ever relevant to the public health challenges of India for more than nine decades of its existence.
This book draws a great deal from the works of Dr. B. S. Narasinga Rao and Dr. V.N. Patwardhan, who have written elaborately on nutrition research in India at two ifferent time points. Here in, we have opted to present the history decade-wise instead of attempting to present the same discipline-wise as it would be a mammoth attempt considering that the Institute's approach to nutrition research has been highly multi-disciplinary. Despite doing so, if at all we have missed out on some important aspects, itis a sheer oversight and not deliberate.
We gratefully acknowledge the unstinted support extended by our colleagues in arts, photography and printing departments of Extension and Training Division.
We hope that the readers will get a broader perspective of NIN's work and its constant relevance to the development of science, technology and health of the nation.
This is a humble effort by us in the 100th year of ICMR, especially as NIN is also inching towards its centenary.
