From a romantic tune to a fast-paced Qawwali to an old Sufi number reinvented, the journey within Rafaqat’s music speaks of the versatility in his singing and universality in his style. He is one of the few singers who attempts at proving themselves song after song until they reach a point of perfection. That is the experience one achieves when listening to the living legacy of khayal singing, Rafaqat Ali Khan, son of renowned Nazakat Ali Khan and nephew of Salamat Ali Khan.
A celebrated singer from Pakistan and the proud recipient of the ‘Amir Khusro Award’ in 1986, Rafaqat now travels to India to establish his name in a new land. After debuting with songs in Rakesh Roshan’s ‘Krrish’, Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Awaarapan’ and Pooja Bhatt’s ‘Dhoka’, he is all set to launch his solo album, NIshaan, with Times Music.
This album is a tribute to the ‘Sham Chaurasi Gharana’ of music to which I belong and owe my strong Sufi routes to. I’d like to remember a few people who are no more with me, but have played an instrumental role in my music career. These include my father, Ustad Nazakat Ali Khan and my uncles Ustad salamat Ali Khan, Ustad Akhatr Ali Khan, Ustad Zakir Ali Khan and Ustad Tasdiq Ali Khan. I would also like to thank a few people in my life, without whose support and duas I wouldn’t have reached this far – Ustad Shafquat Ali Khan, Usatd Sharafat Ali Khan, Tahir Miir, Daler Paaji, Shahzad Ayyub and Ricky Paaji from London, Shadaab Mirza and family and special thanks to Iliyas bhai. Last but not the least, my mother, my brother Sadaqat Ali Khan and my sons, Farasat Ali Khan, Riyasat Ali Khan and Bakht Ali Khan. Most of all, I dedicate this album to my prospective listeners in India for whom I have travelled from Lahore and sincerely hope that my music creates a special place in their hearts.
