Book Description

About the Book

Hanuman Chalisa is a Hindu devotional hymn written in praise of Lord Hanuman. A holy compilation of forty verses and couplets at beginning and end, the mantras epitomizes the unfathomable glory of Lord Hanuman-the biggest devoteee of Almighty Lord Shri Ram. Written by Goswami Tulsidas, a Great poet, Saint, Reformer and Philosopher who is popularly known as the author of Ramcharitmanas, where he retold Ramayana in Awadhi Language. Goswami Tulsidas is also considered to be a reincarnation of Maharishi Valmiki, composer of the original Ramayana in Sanskrit.

'Ode of Lord Hanuman- The Hanuman Chalisa' is a unique poetic translation of Hanuman Chalisa in English. While turning the pages of the book, readers will not only go through the poetic version of the transcendental hymn but they will also enjoy the beautiful colorful illustration representing the exaltations of Lord Hanuman.

Foreword

Of the millions of Gods and Goddess of the Hindu pantheon Shri Hanuman ji is without question the most popular, adored and sought after. He is the incomparable embodiment of Gyan, Bhakti and karma Yoga, knowledge suffused with humanity, physical strength, tempered with restraints, unquestioned faith in the Lord in the best traditions of Nishkam karma as ordained in the Bhagavad Gita. Such is the essence of Shri Hanuman ji Maharaj. He is indeed the epitome of all that is sacred and noble in Human character. Strength and wisdom are the qualities we sorely need for building our national life. Swami Vivekananda rightly exhorted our youth to emulate Shri Hanuman ji as their ideal. It was in similar end in view that Samarth Ramdas in Maharashtra and Goswami Tulsidas in the North initiated the construction of Hanuman temples with Aakharas attached to them in the country side. Shri Hanuman figures in our sculptures, music, even in coins of some Hindu kings, not only in India but also in far off lands such as Indonesia, Thailand, Surinam and even in China.

We have now Hanuman temples adjacent to many of our police stations. There in hardly any village or locality in India without Hanuman temple. Perhaps one of the big reasons for his popularity is our belief that he is very much a living God who continues to dwell in this universe at the behest of his master, the Lord Rama. To him we turn in dire streight, also we do not fail to remember him and make our offerings to him when fortune smiles on us. The number of his devotees is legion, it is therefore, hardly surprising that many saints and poets and even commoners have composed hymns in his praise. Goswami Tulsidas ji's immensely popular Hanuman Chalisa is an outstanding example of this.

Shri Ras Behari, is an ardent devotee of Shri Hanuman ji Mahraj. He has taken upon himself the translation of the poem in english. Translation is, at all times is a difficult undertaking. To remain true to the letter of the text and at the same time to be faithful to its spirit is a daunting task indeed. But Shri Ras Behari is determined soul and for him it has been truly a labor of love and devotion, his humble offering to his lord. How far he has succeeded in this, it is for the readers to judge.

I am sure this rendering of Shri Hanuman Chalisa in English by Shri Ras Behari will earn appreciation from its readers and Hanuman bhakta's everywhere.
