Book Description
About the Book
Set in the British era, the book tries to reimagine and capture the powerful episodes of women's resistance called the Nupi-Lan movement against the British regime in Manipur. In 1904, the first Nupi Lan broke out in response to an order by the colonial authorities to send men in Manipur to the Kabow Valley to fetch timber for re-building the then Police Agent's bungalow. The second Nupi Lan broke out in 1939 in response to the export of rice from Manipur to other regions during the Second World War. Through the rustic and ordinary life of Ibethoibi, a woman who goes out to sell salt cakes every day at the women's market, it brings to light the daily struggle of women and people engulfed in war and man-made crisis during those times. The book also unravels the consequences of the outbreak of the Second World War on a small region like Manipur, and how freedom and independence was seen from the perspective of an individual.

About the Author
Chanamthabam Ronika Devi (b. 1996) is currently a General Manager in a private company based in Manipur. She has the passion for writing since childhood, however, she was convinced only when she won the first prize in a writing competition during her graduation days at Miranda House, Delhi University. From there on, she continued writing on her personal blog and contributed articles in newspapers and magazines. Devi was also selected among 100 poets from across India by Delhi Poetry Slam. Her poem, Forbidden Love is one among many published in the anthology, Love As We Know It. Her love for writing also runs parallel with her fascination for History.

Preface
This may be a tale of a mother from Manipur set some decades ago, but Ibethoibi is every mother, so is Maitun and Sintha. The book is a celebration of motherhood and a tribute to them for their courage and valour. All the characters, although fictional, are drawn from real incidents; they are ordinary, imperfect and unimpressive but they are what we are.
