About The Author

Dr B.K. Tripathy (1936-2007) has been professor and Head, Department of English, Utkal University, and Principal Investigator, UGC Major Research Project, 1997-2000.

Dr. K. M. Patnaik (1928-1999) was Director, public Instruction, Government of Orissa. Earlier he was Principal, Revenshaw College and Vice-Chancellor, Utkal University.

 

Introduction

This new dictionary meets the long-felt need for a standard dictionary for the Oriya-speaking people wishing to learn English. This dictionary can equally well serve the needs of English-speaking people wishing to learn Oriya. The user could be anyone from a school-going child to an informed person. Apart from trying to address the needs of both these groups, the vast number of users who lie between the two have also been kept in mind. This dictionary offers an up-to-date word list of over 40,000 words in English with over 2,00,000 definitions in English and Oriya for users of both languages. The meanings of English words, phrases and idioms (and their usage where necessary) have been given in English along with their equivalent words and meanings in modem Oriya.

The dictionary also provides easy-to-follow pronuncrations for difficult words. Detailed grammatical information, especially on irregular nouns, verbs and adjectives, is given as also variant spellings.
