Pandit Mallikarjun Mansoor

Born in Mansoor village in Dharwar, Karnataka in 1910, the late Pandit Mansoor was trained initially in the basics of Carnatic music from Shri Appayya Swami. He then received training in the Gwalior Gharana style under Pandit Neelakanta Bua and from Ustad Manji Khan and Ustad Bhurji Khan, the sons of maestro Ustad Alladiya Khan in the Jaipur- Atrauli Gharana tradition. His style has thus been an assimiliation of the influences of these three musical traditions- the Carnatic genre and the vocal traditions of the Gwalior Gharana and the Jaipur- Atrauli Gharana.

Pandit Mansoor was bestowed immense honours and awards in the course of his life. Notable amongst them are the Sangeet Natak Academy award, the Padma Vibbushan and the Kalidas Samman (from the Madhya Pradesh government). He was also an honorary director of music at Karnataka University, Dharwad for several years. Pandit Mallilarjun Mansoor passed away in 1992 at the age of 82. He had been suffering from ill- health for some time.
