South Central Zone Cultural Centre, Nagpur, is one of the Seven Zonal Centres established under the Ministry of Culture to coordinate interstate Cultural events through a number of Interactive programmes. Besides festivals of various performing arts, artist's meets and perform such promotional activities, the Nagpur Zonal Centre is proud to implement Reasearch and Field Survey projects in its Member - States with the advice of the respective Departments of Culture. Its aim is to bring out authoritative material on important performing art forms both in the Print and Electronic Media. Specialists are requested to undertake field survey work and preparation of Monographs as well as assisting the Centre's team in preserving the forms on internationally accepted electronic medium. The Centre is developing archives with all these materials.
Shri Vasant Nirgune has prepared this monograph Ritualistic Bhill mytholigical tradition wall painting taken effects to Bhills paint their gods and goddesses in the form of animals and woeship them. Bhills see the images of their god in Horse and Paint in green, blue, yellow, black & white colours Bhills have been worshipping the Horse as a God form times immemoral. Pithora is not only a wall painting but it is a worship ritual. It goes with 'Gatha Gayan'. Thus the Horse - Symbol of God - appears on the wall. This tradition still continues. In Zabua region, we can see all colours and forms of Pithora. The study of all these is of great importance from cultural point of view.
Bhill people are reffered to in Bharatiya Veds - Purans and stories. Bhagaur near Zabua was their capital. After their defeat, they had an important role in the Rajput regime.
Indra gave his kingdom to his nephew Pithora and went away in a mood of Vairagya. This myth is mainly depicted in Bhill wall paintings.
Hindu month Shravan is the time when this wall painting is done. The Painter observes a 'Vrata' until the painting is completed. The whole night is spent singing songs related to Pithora.
Pithora is the God who protects them from all dangers. In Zauba region itself there are different stories about Pithora.
Pithora is a social, cultural, religious ritual.
Reasearcher Mr. Vasant Nirgune could see three different traditional Pithora paintings in border area of Kathiyawad and Gujrat.
