Book Description
About the Book
In this book Prof. Chakraborty has tried to show how Plato's thinking and outlook have widely soaked into the writings of Rabindranath, how the two poet-philosophers after the lapse of centuries have reached the same conclusions as to how man should live and what he should live for. The author substantiates closely and comprehensively the similarity between the two masters in their theories and practices and in their political, social, spiritual experiences and aspirations down to the smallest details in their personal lives and activities. In this book the author has presented the pith and marrow of Greek and Indian wisdom as in a platter with an eye to raising man-kind from the Slough of Despond. "The work as a whole merits high commendation. Full justice has been done to the subject in scholarly accumulation of facts and in realization of the emotional-spiritual aspects. The language throughout is marked by an easy flow and is always elevated to its proper level. As I started reading the manuscript I felt tempted to continue and finish it at a single sitting.

Preface
For a long time a study of Rabindranath in relation to Plato haunted my mind. The more I read Rabindranath, the more the Greek Philosopher of a remote age who was also a poet in a philosophic garb appeared at the back of my mind. The desire to write something on this theme increasingly weighed upon me and I went to my revered teacher Dr. Srikumar Banerjee in this connection. When on hearing of my intention be approved of this idea and lovingly encouraged me to go ahead I felt being on a firmer ground. But still the work could not make any headway owing to many "busy idle diversions". Life is fast fleeting away and I have done it now before it is too late. I have been prompted to do it although there are books galore on Rabindranath only because no other writer, for aught I know, has essayed in this field. And this is my humble excuse for writing this little book on Tagore to whom many great scholars have brought their grandest offerings.

Introduction
Plato and Rabindranath separated by a period of about 2500 years are the two most towering poet-philosophers revealing the nature and purpose of man in his earthly existence. These two God-men have, in a siren voice, called upon him to live and love in a way so as to reach the goal prescribed in varying language by all men of intellect and intuition, vision and imagination. Men has continually been thwarted in his great ascent not only by the clamouring crowd, but also by puerile prophets who have lured him away and thus arrested his march towards the only goal set for him by the wisdom of ages. Yet Plato in his infinite wisdom as early as the 5th century B.C. chalked out the path and purpose of human life in clear and categorical terms. The teaching has echoed and re-echoed through ages and climes but has died down by the bass voices of foolish and pretentious greatness.
