About the Author Dr. Panda Joined the Orissa Education Service as A Lecturer in Political Science In 1964 And Became Reader in Political Science In 1972. He Was A Parliamentary Fellow at The Institute of Constitutional and Parliamentary Studies, New Delhi in 1967-68. During All These Years He Has Served in Different Government Colleges of Orissa And at Present Is in The Ravenshaw Evening College, Cuttack.

Preface In the modern times, three great personalities-Madhusudan Das, Gopabandhu Das and Mahatma Gandhi have inspired, and shaped the political life of the Oriya people. At the turn of the century, Madhusudan enkindled light in the midst of deepest gloom in their national life, awakened them to a consciousness of national identity and led the movement for a separate homeland of their own. Gandhi was the liberator, the leader who led them along with other peoples of India to emancipation from centuries of foreign rule. Gopabandhu, the disciple of Madhusudan and the freedom fighter who joined the liberation movement under Gandhiji's leadership, on the one hand, broadened and deepened their consciousness of national identity, galvanised them to a sense of destiny as a race and, on the other, conceived their struggle for separate homeland in the broader context of liberation from foreign rule and led them participate in the mainstream of nationalist movement and broader vista of Indian life. In fact, he brought Congress to Orissa and prepared the ground for its eventual success. He was truly the architect and representative of Oriya nationalism.
