BIJAY KISHORE SUNDAR RAY was born on 1st June, 1949 and belongs to Bhubaneswar. He joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1972 and retired in the rank of Chief Secretary to the Government of Chhattisgarh "Why do I write poetry?" I ask myself time and again. The English poet William Wordsworth writes, "Poetry is a spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings!" I walk in his footsteps. When I'm overwhelmed with ideas, feelings and powerful imaginations, 1 write poetry to explore my own existence. There's no denying the fact that I look upon poetry as a liberating force that gives meaning to life. "But because I ask my silence, I didn't think, I'm going to die. The opposite is true, it happens I'm going to live", wrote Pablo Neruda, the Nobel Laureate in Literature. My poetic journey too dwells between silence and a restless struggle to remain alive. In my poetry collection "Pragmatic Ways of a Disillusioned Man", I tend to reflect upon existence amid despair and distress. The title poem of this poetry collection refers to a disillusioned man seeking the support of pragmatism to fight absurd illusions! "As a poet and a writer, I'm unstoppable", says B.K.S. Ray. He's influenced by poets like D.H. Lawrence, Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz, Sylvia Plath and T.S. Eliot. "I write poetry in defence of truth and to fight falsehood". "A true poet", says Ray, "has to speak the truth whatever may be the situation". B.K.S. Ray is a humanist out and out and would like to fight for humanity lifelong. His poetic narratives are wedded to a blistering attack on war, aggression, violence, and a ruthless criticism of mindless commercialism, greed, hypocrisy, and cruelty against humanity. As a recipient of many literary awards, B.K.S. Ray is at the moment an author of 54 books that include prose, poetry, plays and essays on contemporary affairs. After his retirement from the LA.S. in 2009, he has settled down in Raipur, Chhattisgarh where he continues to pursue his literary and scholastic studies.
