Book Description

Foreword

I am happy to know that Dr. Kusum Sharma is going to publish her new book with a title, Since the theme of her book is related to my literary creations, obviously my vie views are not quite meaningful or authentic in comparison to others. It has been rightly believed in our tradition : कविः करोति काव्यानि स्वादु जानाति पण्डितः (The poet creates poetry but the real taste is known to the learned reader). Many contemporary critics of our time have given their non-partial views on my creative writings (either on my prose or poetry or sometimes on my research works also) and they are published either in Drik, Durva, Kathasarit, Sagarika etc. or presented in National/International conferences/seminars or as a Foreword/preface to my published books. Besides, a number of scholars from new generation also have produced some fruitful criticism related to my creative writings in Sanskrit. In this series comes the name of the present author Dr. Kusum Sharma who has her own way of observations to review the theme of my poetry in general and that of लोकचेतना reflected in them in particular.

It is not at all unnatural that the new generation of critics is very much aware of the existing trend of criticism. Not only the criticism even the creation of today has every possibility to be influenced by existing best creations. However, Dr. Kusum Sharma maintains the originality throughout her work which is a modified form of her thesis for which she has been awarded Ph.D degree of Rajasthan University, Jaipur. At the outset, I would like to thank her along with her learned supervisor Dr. Lala Shankar Gayawal Prof. & Head of Department, Rameshwari Devi Govt. Girls Collage, Bharatpur, Rajasthan to guide the work in such a scholarly way that she could bring this research work in the present perfect shape. It may not be out of context to say, Dr. Gayawal has contributed substantially to the field of criticism on modern Sanskrit literature in general and Sanskrit journalism in particular.

The work is divided into six chapters excluding Introduction (भूमिका) and conclusion (उपसंहार). In the first chapter, Dr. Kusum provides a general introduction to modern Sanskrit literature In 2nd chapter of the present book she has appropriately introduced my profile of life and works in general and my Sanskrit Creative writings in particular In 3rd chapter she introduces my collections of Sanskrit poetry In fourth chapter one can find thematic classification of लोकचेतना with reference to Prof. Banamli Biswal's poetry (डॉ० बनमाली बिश्वाल के काव्यों में लोकचेतना का विषय विभाजन). Fifth chapter deals with लोकचेतना and social malpractices (लोकचेतना एवं सामाजिक कुरीतियाँ) and the last chapter deals with the cultural malpractices related to लोकचेतना (लोकचेतना एवं सांस्कृतिक कुरीतियाँ) followed by the conclusion containing the findings of the present study.

In her present title, Dr. Kusum Sharma keeps record of my seven collections of Sanskrit poems and four collections of Sanskrit stories. The great poetic journey starts from सङ्गमेनाभिरामा (1996) to यात्रा (2002) passing through व्यथा (1997), त्रऋतुपर्णा (1999), प्रियतमा (1999), वेलेंटाइन्-डे-सन्देशः (2000) and दारुब्रह्म (2001) as important milestones in between. Contextually she passes references to my collections of short stories including नीरवस्वनः, बुभुक्षा, जगन्नाथचरितम् and जिजीविषा along with the single collection of my Odia stories titled as सकालर मुहँ एषणा is my new collection of Sanskrit short stories being published by Central Sanskrit University. I have a couple of collections of Odia poems, namely, वञ्च तुमे मो आयुष नेइ and कश्चित्कान्ता ... My translated Sanskrit writings include तारा अरुन्धती, विवेकलहरी (poems), जन्मान्धस्य स्वप्नः (stories) and पत्रालयः (drama) etc. So far as my unpublished works are concerned, two novels and two Sanskrit dramas, one mahakavya (महात्म माहात्म्यम्) as well as more than ten khandakavyas are still awaiting publication. Some of my khandakavyas are recently published in Padyabandha which is a unique periodical of Sanskrit poetry. Similarly Kathasarit is a unique periodical of Sanskrit stories and Drik is a unique periodical on criticism of contemporary Sanskrit literature. I am happy to note here that I have been a part and partial of these contemporary Sanskrit journals so far as the editing is concerned.I have edited more than 100 issues of more than ten contemporary Sanskrit/Odia/Hindi periodicals some of which are related to contemporary Sanskrit Research.
