This year's H.K. Barpujari Endowment Lecture delivered by Prof. Sajal Nag on the theme 'Raiding the Colonial State: Understanding Tribal Raids in North-East India' dwells mainly on the recent trends to interpret all anti-colonial movements as some kind of militant nationalism. In this connection one may read Anand Yang's definitive work 'Crime and Criminality in British India'.
Dr. Nag in his lecture and later text clearly interprets the so-called tribal raids in north-east India as anti-colonial resistance movement snowballing into the broader nationalist movement in India. This is a very thought-provoking work, however brief as all know brevity is the soul of wit.
We all hope that this monograph of great skill and marshalling of fact will attract all scholars across the globe and inspire them to undertake similar detailed work on the hazy history of north-east India.
