Book Description
About the CD

Ratnakar Pachisi was written in 14th century A.D. by Acharya Ratnakar suri as an expression of repentance for being unable to get over his love for material wealth.

The story behind the origin of this text goes thus Sugham, a disciple of Acharya Ratnakar Suri went to him for his morning lessons and he noticed that his teacher was looking for something in his bag of belongings. He saw that it was a precious stone. This observation filled him with surprise as the first lesson of Jain dharma was Aparigraha owning of any material wealth was supposed to be the root cause of all evil. The first and foremost thought in his mind was how to get his guru to give up this love for the precious stone or the evil of want of material wealth.

After a few days of thinking he got an answer. He went to his guru and asked him for an explanation of a particular sholka saying that he was unable to understand its meaning. The guru explained that the meaning was very simple the root cause of all evil is money and wealth leave the love of material and you shall go to heaven. But the disciple kept coming to him with the same question everyday for six months saying that he was unable to understand its meaning which in turn made the guru very restless.

One night while asleep realization dawned upon the guru. The next morning when his disciple came to him he took the stone and broke it into small pieces and threw it away. The guru as well as the disciple understand each other and both were happy with the deed.

Later Acharya Ratnakar Suri wrote these 25 Shlokas as an expression of his sorrow guilt and repentance for being unable to get over his love for material wealth. He died in the year 1374. Since then Ratnakar Pachisi is recited as a prayer to know oneself as a prayer to God to improve one’s moral values and to free oneself from the want of material possessions.
