About the Book

"Reformatory" is an English translation of Sahitya Akademi award-winning Punjabi novel, Sudhar Ghar. This novel takes a relentless look at the state of prisons, the working of the state of prisons, the working of the police machinery and the judiciary. Itis a searing, honest account of what goes on behind the scenes in prisons and is heart-wrenching in its description of human misery. The title "Reformatory" which is what prisons are supposed to be, is wryly satirical as the book proceeds to give, in great detail, what the reformatories are really like and what they do to the people unfortunate enough to find themselves inside them.

About the Authors

Mitter Sain Meet (b. 1952) is an eminent Hindi writer. He has published eight books including the novels Kafla, Punaswass, Taftish, Katehra, Sudhar Ghar, Kavrav Sabha and the short story collections Laam and Thoss Sabut. Four of his novels have been translated into Hindi and few of them have also been prescribed as text books by different universities. He is the recipient of Nanak Singh Galp Puraskar, Best Novel Award, Swaran Kaur Yadgari Puraskar, Mohan Lal Bhaskar Award, Best Novel Award awarded by Kuldip Singh Trust and Shaakar Pursharthi Award.

Malati Mathur (b. 1958) is an eminent scholar and translator. She writes and translates in and between Tamil, Hindi and English and is a Professor of English at IGNOU. She has several publications to her credit which include Merging Meridians: A D Hope’s Poetic Vision, Remembering Amma, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan: The Jodhpur Years and Affinities. She is the recipient of three Katha Awards, Katha-British Council awards for translating short stories and novels from Tamil and Hindi into English. She was nominated for the women achievers award for literary contribution by Femina in 2015.
