Book Description
Introduction

Gujarat lies on the western side of India. It has diverse habitats and regions ranging from deserts to deciduous forests, freshwater wetlands to saline marshes and mangroves. The state has one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world- the Aravallis. Other hill ranges like the Vindhyas, Satpuras and the Sahyadris meet in Gujarat.

The state can be divided into five parts: South Gujarat, Central Gujarat, North Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kachchh. Gujarat has the longest coastline in India with coral reefs, beaches and tidal flats.

Rivers like Banas, Sabarmati, Mahi, Narmada and Tapi drain into the Gulf of Khambhat while the rivers Bhader, Ojat and Shetrunji of the Kathiawar peninsula drain into the Arabian Sea.

Kachchh district has salt deserts called the Rann, that are in the northwest. The Kathiawar peninsula consists of arid and semi-arid scrubland lying between the Gulf of Kutch and the Gulf of Khambhat.

From the coast, low hills gradually rise and form the Girnar Hills. Gir National Park lies in the southwestern region of the Kathiawar peninsula.

Some of the unique biodiversity hotspots are Flamingo city between Khadir and Pachchham in the Great Rann of Kachchh. The northern arid regions of Kachchh are the habitat for the Spiny tailed lizard Sara hardwickli. The Little Rain of Kachchh is the home for the last surviving population of the Indian Wild Ass. Especially unique are the Gaga Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary, Gir National Park - the home of the Asiatic Lion, and Narara Marine National Park in the Gulf of Kachchh.
