Introduction

Gita Govindam and Sahavilasa Gitam :
Jayadeva's immortal poem, "Gita Govindam " which was written in the 12th century A. D. has had such a profound influence on later poets that to this day. There have been more than sixty works based on its model. "Sahavilasa Gitam" of Dundi Kavi is one such work.
Author of Saha Vilasa Gitam: In the colophon, the author says that he is the son of Lakshmana Dikshitar, that he belongs to the Vyasa kula and that he is the Pauranika in the Court of King of Sahaji. He calls himself "Abinava Jayadeva."
The hero of the work :
Just as in the Gita Govinda there are three characters Krishna, Radha and her maid, in the Sahavilasa Gitam also there are the King Sahaji, Leelavati and her maid.
Sahaji was the second in the line of Maharatta Kings who ruled over Tanjore after the Telugu speaking Naiks. He was related to Shivaji and beloned to the Bhosla dynasty. He ruled over Tanjore from 1686 to 1712. He was proficient in several languages like Telugu, Sanskrit, Marathi, Persian etc. He was also well trained in the fine arts like music and drama.
He was a devotee of Tyagesar, the deity at Tiruvarur, and has to his credit a number of padas in praise of the deity. His Pallaki Seva Prabandbam has been acclaimed as a worthy contribution to Karnatic Music. His collection of raga lakshanas has great musicological value.
His court was adorned by many poets and musicians Tamil composers like Ramakavi and Vasudeva Kavi were patronised by him. Dundi Kavi pays handsome tribute to his patron for his munificence.
’ Sahendra Vilasa of Sridhara Ayyaval and Sringara Manjari Sahajiyam of Periappa Kavi eulogise the many gifts of the ruler.

Preface

This Sanskrit publication presents to the public an interesting work SAHAVILASA GITAM " on the model of Gita Govinda, praising Sahaji, one of the Maratha Rajas of Tanjore (A. D. 1684 - 1710 ). He is called Abhinava Bhoja. The Library has already published Gita Govinda of Jayadeva with notes on Abhinaya for every word of the Slokas and the Ashtapadis (upto 17th Astapadi the year 1950. Now we are publishing this work with the available two copies of Sahavilasa Gitam from our manuscripts section (D. Nos. 10957 and 10958)
Dr S. Ramanathan, an eminent musician and international scholar and Valuthur Sri Rajagopala Sarma have edited this work with all their profoundity. They deserve our appreciation for editing this fine work.
Government of India have to he thanked for their recurring grant for publishing rare collections of -manuscripts.
