Book Description

Introduction Rgveda is followed by Samaveda. According to Brhaddevata "one who knows Säma can only understand the essence of the Vedas." Undoubtedly, Rgveda is the most ancient testament which contains the eulogies of different deities who are the personifications of natural forces but the method of reciting these mantras or Reas with the proper notations is found in Samaveda. Rgveda is incomplete without Särmaveda. The mantras are effective only when they are recited with proper notations. The sound vibrations produced by the proper recital of these mantras influence the whole atmosphere and make it favourable.

That is why Brhaddevatā is right in claiming that the person who knows Säma can only understand the meaning of the Vedic mantras.
