Samskrta Sangita Manjusa is a collection of research articles presented and appreciated in different seminars and conferences of National and State level. The attempt is made here to assemble twelve interdisciplinary research papers, pertaining to the field of Music and Sanskrit and vice versa. The effort has been made here, not only to explore and exhibit the musical elements present in Sanskrit literature, but also to find out sincerely, the hidden music talents of odia authors and musicologists in contributing and producing musical treatises of Sanskrit Language.
Music is the life inspiring force which gives eternal happiness and real essence to human life. It is the sum-mum bo-num of human beings. It is the most vibrant source of revealing the cultural heritage of any nation. However, it is the nadayoga, filled with purity, sanctity, serenity and spirituality forever. Amongst the five fold varieties of lalitakalā (fine arts), it is the subtlest and supreme one. It is the wonderful combination of vocal (gita), instrumental (vādya) and dance (nrtya) form of art.
This book reveals the sound knowledge and awareness about music of our ancient seers of Vedic literature and poets of Classical literature. Besides, it also ascertains the Sanskrit knowledge and poetic talent of our ancient musicologists, specially of Odisha who have taken the pain in producing musical treatises in Sanskrit to the field of music in national level.
Thus, this book focuses in establishing the contribution of Sanskrit to the field of Music and vice versa. This will give way to the future researchers to do interdisciplinary research in both the fields. The strong relationship between Sanskrit and music is established here. The ancient musical treatises written in Sanskrit are the store house of musicology which needs to be probed into by our modern scholars with their knowledge in Sanskrit. So without the knowledge in Sanskrit, research in the field of music is not possible.
In this context, the first article, 'Gitagovinde Sangitata-ttvam' deals with the musical elements found to be present in the most popular lyric poetry i.e. the Gitagovinda of Sri Jayadev, a celebrated poet of 12th century A.D.. The term 'music' as the combination of Gita, Vadya and Nrtya, has been reflected properly in the twenty-four Prabandhas of Gitagovinda, set in various rāgas, tālas being accompanied by bādya and being supported by nṛtya. The lucidity of the expression in the love theme of Radha and Krsna and the Prabandha style of composition is very much supportive in establishing the musical elements of Gitagovinda. This paper is presented in the 45th session of AIOC, BORI, Pune, 2010 held at R.S.Vidyapeetha, Tirupati, A.P.. This paper is awarded Kamalesh Kumari Kulashrestha prize for the best performance in Classical Literature section.
The second article Bhakti Sangīteşu Gitagovindam' establishes the devotional aspect of surrendrance of Radha to Krsna. Here the musical aspects of Gitagovinda has been analysed from devotional point of view. The musical composition of Gitagovinda in the form of 'Prabandhas' reach the highest level of devotion. Music is divine and the divinity is exhibited through devotional songs like Prabandhas. Thus, the love lyrics of Jayadev's Gitagovinda, belong to devotional category, as they epitomise the eternal love of Radha and Krsna . This paper is presented in the National Seminar on 'sri Jayadeva Literature' held at R.S.Vidyapeetha, Tirupati, A.P. in 2009.
