Foreword
It is with great pleasure that I write a few paragraphs Itbout the book Dr. Ratha Soni Shefa Sant Kabir's Way to Emotional Intelligence. On an instant response to this title, one may wonder what Sant Kabir had to do with Emotional Intelligence. Most of us are used to looking upon Kabir as a poet who was very controversial in his time and yet was loved by all communities. His couplets (Dohe) are still as popular or may even be more popular today than they may have been in his own time. A good number of us understand their meaning, too, but generally do not care about their depth of meaning and relevance to our day-to-day life. 1, myself, grew like that till I was influenced by Kabir's personality in my first visit to Maghar, where Kabir is said to have died. He wanted to challenge the popular belief that death at Maghar was a sure way to hell, as opposed to death in Varanasi which ensured heaven. He deliberately migrated to Maghar during his last days. One is not sure whether Kabir went to hell or heaven after his death, but the fact is that he is revered by all and is proving even more relevant today as we advance in the modern times of science and technology. When I read Kabir with this frame of mind, he became my mentor. Each couplet of his gave me a deep meaning and an answer to all conflicts of life. This resulted in equanimity (Samatva) in my life and no challenge of life could disturb me. Though it took some time in fruition, once imbibed there was no dilemma any more. I wanted to share this conviction with others and this led to the creation of Kabir Peace Mission in 1990. The word "peace" here meant an integrated development leading to peace all around. The Mission highlighted the fact that human life is a rare privilege and it should be lived with a missionary zeal. Dr. Rashmi Soni is a modern-day educationist, as well as a psychologist. She has a long experience in teaching and has come across thousands of young students. As a compassionate person, she tried to understand them closely, rather than judge them as most of us do. She observed that despite all the success in academics and career, a good number of the students were not happy and suffered from multiple problems. The modern-day psychologists only address their problems at a surface level and may be giving temporary relief to them. However, Dr. Rashmi goes deeper into the source of the problem and proposes solutions which address the root cause rather than just the effects. This book is the result of her deep contemplation. Fundamentally, human psyche has remained the same since ancient times. Each one of us wants to be loved, understood, appreciated, and encouraged. But in the race today, most of us have no time even for ourselves, what to say for others. The result is that today, a human being is a lonely creature amidst a crowd of so-called well-wishers. We get a large number of greetings, messages, gifts, etc., on occasions like like birthdays, festivals, anniversaries, and others, but none of them gives us eternal peace. After a temporary joy, we revert to the state of loneliness. Dr. Soni has been successfully able to relate Kabir to this inner need of human beings and shares it through this book.
