Preface This work is substantially based on the dissertation entitled Some Minor Deities in Indian Religion and Art written by the author when he was a Ministry of Education Research Fellow during the sixties in the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology in the University of Madras, Madras. He is thankful to the late Professor T. V. Mahalingam under whose guidance research was carried out and the Ministry of Education (as it was then named), Government of India for awarding the fellowship to facilitate the study. He is also grateful to the Archaeological Survey of India and the authorities of the Government Museum, Madras, the National Museum, New Delhi, the Indian Museum, Calcutta, the Prince of Wales Museum, Bombay and the Lucknow Museum, Lucknow for rendering facilities for study. He is much obliged to many other museums and institutions for providing material for study including photographs. The University of Madras was kind enough to permit him to publish this thesis which was submitted for the award of the M. Lit. Degree. He is thankful for this.

Even though there is considerable time gap between the time of the preparation of the manuscript and its publication, the author did not find it necessary to revise or modify his views. He is thankful also to M/s Mittal Publications for printing the book neatly and the enormous patience shown in getting the manuscript and other material from the author.
