Satyananda Yoga in Europe is a series of four volumes dedicated to the teachings of Sri Swami Satyananda Saraswati in Europe, spanning his many visits between 1968 and 1983. During his first World Tour in 1968, he introduced himself and the scientific yoga he was going to give to aspirants and seekers of the West. Rishis Arundhati and Vasishtha accompanied him throughout and painstakingly recorded his lectures, satsangs and classes. Their short introductions and personal anecdotes bring this unique period of yoga propagation alive.
Satyananda Yoga in Europe Volume One covers the first three tours of 1968, 1969 and 1970 when Sri Swami Satyananda visited Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Northern Ireland and Switzerland. The focus of his teaching was tantra, kundalini and kriya yoga.
To properly understand Swami Satyananda Saraswati's contribution to yoga vidya, yogic wisdom, in the twentieth century it is important to accurately and chrono-logically exhibit Swami Satyananda Saraswati's progressive introduction, development and adaptation of traditional and classical yoga to suit the modern lifestyles of people, as well as, making yoga practices, often developed for renunciates and their lifestyles, available to householders, and hence to the majority of people leading hectic and time consuming lives, earning a living, with little time to devote to their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs. Thus, we have presented his theoretical and practical teaching chronologically and exactly as he introduced them over a period of fifteen years. Each year he would introduce yogic concepts and practices up to a certain depth making sure that his audience would completely understand what was involved and individuals would have sufficient time to practise what they had learned in spite of their hectic daily routines. Those who had practised what he had taught one year could easily deepen their understanding and practise as a result of his progressive teaching in the following years.
We hope that our chronological, systematic and complete (for that 15 year period and venue in Europe) of Swami Satyananda Saraswati's teachings contained in these volumes will allow the discerning reader to discover the many ways in which Swami Satyananda Saraswati ensured that his students would thoroughly master what they had learned from him and thus to achieve true success in their own practices and in their teaching of others as well.
His true genius in accomplishing this can only be discovered by carefully studying his own words and the way he developed yogic wisdom and practice over the years. To facilitate this understanding on the part of the reader we have included summaries, synopsis and certain kinds of analysis by Rishi Arundhati and Rishi Vasishtha throughout the volumes which may prove useful since they accompanied, recorded and transcribed Sri Swamiji throughout the years involved.
We will briefly indicate publications that present the teachings of Swami Satyananda Saraswati not covered in the present volumes. During the years 1968 to 1983 Swami Satyananda Saraswati went on a number of world tours in which he progressively introduced all practices of tantric yoga to a vast public in the West and which led to the establishment of permanent centers and ashrams teaching all forms of Bihar Yoga all over the world with its spiritual center at the Bihar School of Yoga in Munger, Bihar, India.
These activities and accomplishments outside India are summarily documented within the context of the documentation of the overall activities and accomplishments of Swami Satyananda Saraswati, most of which took place in India, in the book Mandate and Accomplishments (Past, Present and Future 1962-1982, Volume 1: History of Bihar School of Yoga under the guidance of Swami Satyananda Saraswati. Swami Satyananda Saraswati, Inspiration - Italian Tours (1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984), Development Satyananda Yoga in Italy (1980-2009).
