Book Description
From the CD

In the Indian tradition, marriage is viewed as a sacrament. Indian marriage, popularly called “Shaadi” in north India, signifies the life – long commitment of a wife and husband, and is the strongest social bond that can exist between a man and a woman. Two lives unite, tow families come together. This auspicious occasion requires the blessings of both humans and the Gods. Traditionally it is believed that sound of Shehnai invokes the Divine. Shehnai creates a mangaldhwani, an auspicious sound. All the important events of Indian life are initiated with the sound of shehnai. The sound of shehnai brings celebration and sanctity to the shaadi ceremony.

Bismillah Khan

The unrivalled shehnai player Bismillah Khan is a living legend of Indian classical music.

Bismillah Khan was born on 21 March, 1916 in a family whose ancestors were court musicians of the princely state of Dumrao in Bihar. His uncle Ali Bux, a well – known shehnai player at the Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, gave him training. Bismillah Khan always performs along with two accompanists, one of them being the main complimentary support. For many years, Bismillah was accompanied with the duggi as percussion. Later, he switched over to tabla as an accompaniment. When Bismillah plays, his shehnai sings. While he is perfect in raagdaari, Bismillah is equally superb in the rendering of thumri, kajri and chaiti. Bismillah’s devotional and wedding tunes played on the shehnai are hugely popular.

For serving the cause of classical music, he has received numerous awards and honours which include the national awards Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and more recently Bharat Ratna the greatest of the national awards. This great artiste has had the honour dawn of India’s Independence on 15 Aug 1947.
