Based on an Urdu novel by Rajinder Singh Bedi, this story is about Rano, (Hema Malini), a woman abused by her mother-in-law and husband, Triloka (Kulbushan Kharbanda) who plies a horse cart by day and drinks and beats his wife by night.

Her troubles seem to be over when her husband is killed but the Panchayat (village council) passes a resolution asking her to marry Mangal her brother-in-law, whom she has brought up almost as one of her own. How much more will she have to sacrifice to ensure the survival of her children?
