"भूमिका संस्कृत वाङ्मय निखिल जगत् में अधुनातन मान्यता के अनुसार ऋषिदृष्ट पद्यविधा में आबद्ध ऋग्वेद ही प्राक्तन वाड्मय समुपलब्ध है। यह वाड्मय संस्कृत में ही समुपलब्ध है। संस्कृत के द्विविध रूप हमारे समक्ष प्राम हैं। एक वैदिक संस्कृत तथा द्वितीय लौकिक संस्कृत। वैदिक वाङ्मय के रूप में चारों वैदिक संहिताएँ जो ऋग्वेद, सामवेद, यजुर्वेद तथा अथर्ववेद के नाम से विदित हैं। इन चारों वेदों के ब्राह्मण ग्रन्थ, आरण्यक ग्रन्थ तथा उपनिषद ग्रन्थ ये भी वैदिक बाड़मय में ही परिगणित हैं। इनके पश्चात् कवि वाल्मीकि द्वारा प्रणीत संस्कृत रामायण, वेदव्यास द्वारा रचित महाभारत तथा अनामकर्तृक अष्टादश पुराण, षट्‌शास्र आदि लौकिक संस्कृत वाङ्मय के नाम से विश्वत हैं। इस प्रकार संस्कृत वाङ्मय का द्विधा विभाग मान्यमार्ग है। संस्कृत वाङ्मय का यह विभाग हमें इस ओर इंगित करता है कि वाड्मय की धारा अबाध गति से सतत प्रवहमान रहती है। पर इस धारा में पाणिनि व्याकरण एक प्रबल बाधक बन कर आया जिससे प्रवहमान वेगवती धारा किञ्चित् शिथिलायमान् हो गयी। जब हम वैदिक संहिताओं की भाषा, ब्राह्मणों की भाषा, आरण्यकों की भाषा तथा उपनिषदों की भाषा पर अक्षिपात करते हैं तो ज्ञात होता है कि यह धारा बड़ी वेगवती होकर परिवर्तनशीला थी पर उसके पश्चात् लौकिक संस्कृत की धारा रामायण से लेकर आज तक एक समान दिखलाई देती है। इससे हमें यह अनुमिति करने में तनिक भी विलम्ब नहीं होता है कि वस्तुत्तस्तु पाणिनि की प्रतिभा ने अत्यन्त वेगवती भाषामयी धारा को नागफाँस में फाँस कर रख दी है, अस्तु । संस्कृत शब्द संस्कारवती भाषा के लिए रूढ है।
