Book Description
About the Book
This book, titled "Sikhim: With Hints on Mountain and Jungle Warfare," is published as a tribute to the officers and men of the Sikhim Field Force for their instrumental role in successfully concluding a challenging campaign. It explores the geographical significance of Sikhim, highlighting its potential for opening commercial relations with Thibet, Central Asia, and Western China. The papers within discuss matters relevant to commanding forces in mountainous terrain and emphasize strategic considerations. The author reflects on military strategies, employing small and agile parties to disconcert the enemy.

About the Author
Colonel John Cox Gawler (1830-1882) served in the military, achieving the rank of colonel after participating in the 8th Xhosa War (1850-1853). In 1855, he became a special magistrate in British Kaffraria. Besides his military career, Gawler authored works such as "The British Line in the Attack, Past and Future" (1872) and "Sikkim, with Hints on Mountain and Jungle Warfare."

Introduction
These Papers are published- 1. As a tribute to the officers and men of the Sikhim Field Force, whose heartiness, energy, and excellent conduct were in the highest degree instru-mental in bringing to a successful and happy termination a campaign which, for the time it lasted, was pronounced by competent judges to have been as hard a bit of work as they had ever seen. 2. Because, from its geographical position, as well as from the complete success which crowned the expedition, Sikhim has been recently brought before the public as offering special facilities for opening commercial relations with Thibet, Central Asia, and Western China. 3. Because they contain a fair list of matters which would come under the consideration of the Officer in command of a force, whether independent or other-wise, particularly in a mountainous country. They exhibit no brilliant novelty in strategy or tactics.
