Book Description
Preface

Search for a suitable fabric that affords protection, comforts, pleasant feeling and asthatics has been constant endeavour of man, Ancestral society developed fabric made of cotton for protection against cold and heat and as civilization progressed, they made silk fabric. Silk has always assumed highly prestigious value in our society. Today silk has reached the pinnace of its glory and it is one of the important industries in our country.

India has unique place in the modern world. Nature has endowed this country with the types of vegetation, whose silk worms of all the four types thrived in this country. India has sound base of silk making from ancient times. There are people in different parts of the country, adept in silk making. India's silk industry got a big boost during the early days of East India Company. The English traders found silk expert from this country and this became a very profitable business. They tried to give proper shape to this industry.

Silk industry has been occupying an important place in the economy of Bihar from time immemorial, yet, it has received scant attention from scholars and researchers. Among all the states, Bihar has significant place in silk production. Tassar silk of Bhagalpur has great acceptance from foreign consumers and it has great potential to increase income and employment to the people at Bihar. It has been found that neither the government nor the traders have come up to accept the challenge. Indeed, much needs to be done to bring it to a level where it can make its impact on the economic life of Bihar. The book has delved deep into all aspects of silk industry and presented them in seven chapters.

In chapter one, the basic features and evolution of silk from the dawn of civilization to the present day have been discussed. The objective of this chapter is to introduce the evolution of silk in the modern society. The chapter two provides socio-economic features of Bihar: its demographic pattern, land-man relationship, its flora and fauna, etc. for having a bird's, eye view of the main parameters of state to appreciate the role of silk in Bihar. We have described the main features of silk industry in India in chapter three. The Chapter four depicts the basis infrastructural preparedness for conduct and growth of silk industry. We have shown the trends in silk output, income, and employment generation from silk business. In Chapter six we have made an attempt to identify problems facing silk industry. We have presented a blue-print for giving proper shape for the growth of silk industry in the last chapter. However, just one study, like the present one cannot be adequate to cover all the gaps in our knowledge about the industry. There is always a scope for a more specific and indepth examination. Hence, the study ends with suggestion for further lines of research to examine other dimensions of the industry.
