Book Description
About the Book
An erudite scholar, a practitioner of the masterly art of fine reading and a writer across genres, Dr. Swaminath Pandey, not without reason, prefers to be described, more than an author, as an avid and intense reader of the classical and contemporary literature. The knowledge thus acquired over the years, and his felicity in Sanskrit, Hindi and English languages, adds to the stature, easily making him an inimitable and extremely rare treasure-house of texts of the yore.

His latest publication is a gem of an analysis. 'Some Glimpses of Greek and Sanskrit Literary Criticism' deals in detail with the works of Longinus and Anandvardhana and literature of their times, providing rare insights into that period.

What, as he says, was composed some fifty years ago, if not more, was his work at Jadhavpur University under an scholarly guru for his Doctorate, remains relevant in demystifying the works of the Greek and Sanskrit greats. One is unable to understand the inordinate delay in bringing the work to light, but, may be, it was a case of the reader towering over the author in him which is not at all uncommon in the literary fraternity.

About the Author
The critics may speak with a thousand tongues but this work reinforces the idea that despite differences and distances the human race is intrinsically one. Languages may differ but the responses transcend time and space. Dr. Pandey's work is not just limited to what Longinus and Anandvardhana wrote or what previous scholars chose to comment on, it offers fresh insight as well. It categorically pronounces that the greatest tragedy of Sanskrit literature is that it has no great tragedy at all. He argues that this absence is ironical, to say the least, as the entire life of Rama is a tremendous tragedy and the Mahabharata is a series of tragedies. His argument is that Sanskrit authors did not overlook the tragedies, they just looked at the stories from a different angle. While the Greek looked at life as it was, the attitude of the Sanskrit poets adhered largely to the adage that all is well that ends well. This work, I am certain, will be an essential guide and life companion to the scholars of the ancient texts.

Preface
The present work had originally been a thesis for which I was awarded the Ph.D. degree by the Jadavpur University in 1961. This thesis was written under the supervision of my most revered and beloved teacher (now the late) Dr. Ramaranjan Mukherjee, former Vice-Chancellor of the Bardwan and Ravindra Bharti Universities, Chancellor of Venkateshwara University, Tirupati (A.P.) and director of the Vivekanand Research Institute, Calcutta. This thesis ought to have been published at least 3 decades earlier and it might have still laid unpublished, had not my student Dr. Sunita Pandey [P.GT.- Hindi, Army Public School, Faizabad (U.P.)] gaded me constantly, it would have remained yet unpublished. For this I have no words sufficient to thank her.
