Orissa province is situated at the central-eastern part of peninsular India, with a broad Sea coast of Bay of Bengal. The main river of this province is Mahanadi River.
H. K. Mahatab narrates, "Orissa as it is today consists of portions of the three ancient regions Kalinga, Utkal or Odra and Kosala, which in course of centuries under political, social and economic pressure joined together in the 12th century A.D. and developed to form the Oriya Society as a distinct entity in the realm of India. Of all the regions, kalinga was the most prominent and advanced in all respects. The Original inhabitants of these regions belong to the Sabar Tribe which had distinct Civilization of its own. Thanks to the discovereis of archaeologists, it is now conclusively proved that pre-Aryan civilization was of a high order and it influenced the Aryan civilization in many ways. There was conflict between the two civilizatios in many ways. There was conflict between the two civilizations in the initial state as is found in Rig Veda the earliest of the Vedas. But in course of time by mutual give and take, there was mutual accommodation as is found in the later Vedas. Even then the shades of two civilizations remained prominently in various regions in India. The shade of Aryan civilization is distinguishable in north India where as in the South that of pre–Aryan Dravidian civilization is distinguishable. But Orissa is a region lying between the north and the south, the synthesis has been so complete that the shades of two civilizations are not distinguishable. Thus Orissa is the epitome of India, as its culture developed in course of centuries as a result of action and reaction of pre Aryan and Aryan civilizations.
Some of the papers in the book deal with inner or secret mysterious yogic facts, as known from archaeological findings.
There-fore the book is named "Some Tantric Esotericism of Orissa." Author's unpublished and published papers are compiled in this book. for easy access. Acknowledgement list of the published papers is given.
In total eight yonis are discovered in Nuapada district of Orissa province. One of these yonis, found from the Sand of Udanti river, has a triangle Yantra. Triangle Yantra belongs to the goddess Bhairavi. In general, the Yantra of Yoni itself is triangle. So, it can safely be mentioned that the Yoni worship and Bhairavi cult had originated from early historic period in this interland of Orissa. Bhairavi is a benign manifestation of Sakti, the 5th Goddess of Dasa-mahavidya and is the giver of knowledge, according to "Sākta Pramoda". ("Sakta Pramoda", ed. Sri Venkatesvara Press, Bombay, 1951, p. 262). So, it can be claimed that knowledge of human-beings has sparked out to entire globe from Nuapada district area of Orissa province. The rock area of Gurahandi shows the earliest trace of Kundalini's Sahasrara chakra, which is the gift of Tantra to Humanbeings. The discovery of Yogic conception of "Yogimath Rock shelter painting", Model stone plough, seated steatite figurine found at Khariar, ivory Babylonian Seal unearthed at Baripada and other findings discussed in this book, definitely proves that the hinterland of Orissa province had great cultures, both spiritual and material in early period. Hence the opinion of H. K. Mahatab, "Kalinga was the most prominent and advanced in all respects", as stated above, is a wrong opinion and cann't be accepted.
As discovery of Ivory Babylonian Seal is dealt earlier, it is worth knowing about Trade of Pre Mauryan times. M. M. Singh states, "The Bavera Jataka, speaks of trade with Baverurattha, a birdless country which appears to be Babylon and there is evidence, both foreign and indigenous to establish India's trade relation with Babylon and the coutries on the Mediterranean during the 6th century B. C. Mr. Kennedy who worked on this subject concluded that maritime commerce between India and Babylon flourished in 7th and the 6th, but more specially in the 6th century B.C. Jackson4 writing on India's ancient trade has observed that the Buddhist Jatakas and some of the Sanskrit law books tell us that Ships from Bhroach and Sopara traded with Babylon from the 8th to the 6th century B.C." This proves that present Orissa province territory had trade relations with Babylon in those remote days.
