About The Book

My purpose to write the story of the Ramayana in abridged form is to divert the minds of my young readers and to inculcate in them some moral values of life. As the Indian epic shows the triumph of virtue over vices, my book will develop the power of judgement of my readers and will open up to them a new world of vision. I hope, the story of the Ramayana, written by me will be enjoyable to our readers.

About the Author

The author (M.A., medalist, PhD. English), out of love for children, abridged some books, also wrote an original one under Cambridge India, and translated a book ""History of Tripura: from Monarchy to Democracy"" and wrote ""Stories from the past"" based on the Puranas etc. under Avenel Press.

Preface

The Ramayana, the great classical epic of India, was at first composed by Valmiki, formerly a dacoit, turned to a sage, Later on, it was revised by many including Kritibas Ojha in Bengali. The story of the epic, depicts the royal birth of Rama, his banishment for fourteen years along with his wife Sita, and his half brother Laxmana, to lead a forest life by the curse of Kaikeyi, one of the queens of the king Dasharatha, the abduction of Sita by the demon Ravana, Rama's alliance with Sugreeva, the king of the monkeys and Sita's ultimate rescue by Rama and his associates. The epic also portrays some exemplary characters like the bravery of Rama, brotherly love of Laxmana, loyalty of Sita, the devotional service of Hanuman, the admirable fighting spirit of Ravana against all odds of life, which are quite unique in their perfection. The epic has been the source of inspiration for all the time, being closer to earth, dealing with the joys and the sorrows of common men; in fact the character of Rama as portrayed, being the representation of Divinity, came down to the earth as a saviour of mankind, counterpoised by the villainous character, Ravana, a man of flesh and blood. The excellence of the epic lies in its wonderful theme, reinforced by some variety of episodes and its unique style and diction.

I have tried my best to retain the main theme as it is, though omitting some anecdotes or episodes, so as to make the epic entertaining for the young readers.
