The earlier Subject Index published in 1940 and prepared by Late Rao Bahadur C.R. Krishnamacharulu related to the Annual Reports on South Indian Epigraphy from 1887 to 1936. The present volume relates to the Annual Reports on Indian Epigraphy from 1937 to 1972 and has been edited by Dr. G.S. Gai, retired Chief Epigraphist in the Archaeological Survey of India. In the preparation of the Index Dr. Gai was actively assisted by Shri B.S. Raman, presently Superintending Archaeologist, Archaeological Survey of India, and then working as Epigraphical Assistant in the office of the Chief Epigraphist. Subsequently, the typescript was thoroughly checked and made press ready by Dr. M.D. Sampath, Superintending Epigraphist under the supervision of Shri M.N. Katti, Chief Epigraphist. Proofs have been corrected by Dr. S.P. Tewari and Dr. C.R. Srinivasan, Deputy Superin-tending Epigraphists, Shri. N. Nanjundaswamy, Senior Epigraphical Assistant, Dr. Venkatesha, D.M. Nagaraju, S. Nagarjuna, T.S. Ravi-shankar and S. Swaminathan, Epigraphical Assistants. I am sure that the world of scholars will welcome the present publication as a useful work of ready reference. Its speedy publication has been facilitated by the special interest evinced by Dr. S. Subramonia Iyer, Deputy Superintending Epigraphist, Archaeological Survey of India, Mysore and Shri J.C.
