Why this book?
Swami Vivekananda's thoughts on life in general and on education in particular are not only appealing but inspiring. It was at the age of fourteen that I was guided to read Swami Vivekananada's thoughts. I must acknowledge that even though I eagerly read Swami Vivekananda's thoughts I did not completely comprehend it. This was undoubtedly due to inadequacy of my knowledge due to my age and life experiences. However, I was motivated by those thoughts which were simple, spiritual and straightforward to understand. These thoughts not only helped me to search for more and more knowledge but also revealed the true purpose of life in a gradual way. It made me God directed in my thought as well as action. Speaking Truth, being positive and helping others as well as being happy from within transformed my approach towards life. My perception towards life became more focused. I was able to recognize the interesting facet of Swami Vivekananda's thought and apply it to make my life more significant. His thoughts on education particularly encouraged me to be more understanding towards my own self and towards my students. It enhanced my teaching skills but most importantly it improved my life skills. I did not simply go to a classroom to teach but I now went to the classroom to enthuse young Indians.
I am thankful to God for this fantastic Divine arrangement created for me for which I will be grateful to Him forever.
It gives me immense pleasure to write the Foreword for the book Swami Vivekananda: Praxis of Education by Dr.Priya M Vaidya. As this year is celebrated as 150th Birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, Dr. Priya M Vaidya has paid appropriate tribute to Swamiji by writing this book. Swamiji was not only an ardent advocate of theoretical philosophy of Advaita Vedanta but these ideas were flowing in his flesh and blood. He wanted every human person to practice the practical philosophy of Advaita Vedanta to achieve material as well as spiritual well-being.
He spread the message of Vedanta, 'every soul is potentially divine. To actualize this potential, what is essential is right type of education that balances material and spiritual well being. Dr. Priya M Vaidya has very effectively presented thoughts of Swami Vivekananda on education in this book. The spiritualist approach towards education as viewed by Swamiji, shows ows us the path to bridge the gap between 'information' and 'formation'. It is his integration of science, technology, value based life style and spiritual practice, which will be the key to solve problems that concern modern technocrat society. To avoid the crisis of stark materialist, egocentric, hedonistic approach, the balanced approach of Swamiji with regard to education will work as the savior of mankind.
Dr.Priya M Vaidya needs to be congratulated for writing on a relevant theme at the appropriate occasion. My best wishes and blessings are with her.
