The book is a passage to the wonderland of some of the famous myths enshrined in the Mahabharata. Regrettably, for most of the boys and girls of the present generation, it is an untravelled world. But myths are our great heritage. They reflect the social, moral and religious ideals of the age they represent. They hark us back to our roots. The author has turned the bare narratives from the original into delightful stories in lucid and racy prose. This little book, it is hoped, will awaken the readers' interest in the fascinating world of Indian mythology.
The author of the book, Prof. Nanigopal Chakraborty, did his M.A. in English from Calcutta University in 1962. Thereafter he joined West Bengal Education service in 1963 and served with distinction several government colleges. In 2000 he retired from Hooghly Mohsin College as head, department of English. He has to his credit two books in vernacular on the Mahabharata.
Perennial is man's love of stories. The primitive man loved to listen to them after the day's toil. So does the computer savvy man of today. Stories please and instruct as well, and Indian myths are generally allegorical.
The book contains eleven stories, chosen at random, from the Mahabharata. They have been written strictly according as they are told in the Mahabharata by Vyasdeva. The stories are as in the original, only the style is mine.
The purpose of the book is to acquaint the teenagers with some of the Indian myths that have fascinated the minds of men and women down the ages. Care has been taken to present them in lucid prose. If the youngsters find the book a good read, I shall consider my task accomplished.
Prof. Biswanath Banerjee, my friend and well-wisher, took pains to read the stories with care and suggested improvements. I wish him well in his retirement.
