It has been a strange phenomenon in the history of our country that whenever conditions get into a chaotic state, a 'Maha-Purush' appears on the scene to put things right. Swami Dayanand Saraswati appeared on the Indian horizon at precisely a similar time. Hinduism had lost its dynamism and it had be-come a prey to many malpractices. The dynamism and momentum which had enabled it successfully to withstand the onslaughts of invaders over thousands of years, had, it appeared, gone and that it was likely to succumb to the forces of superstition, hypocrisy, sham and cant.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati was not only a religious teacher, but he was also imbued with a deep sense of patriotism and feeling for the down-trodden masses of our country. It would not be wrong to say that he was the first ardent patriot and social re-former in those dark days of India's subjugation by a foreign power. Besides preaching a rational and dispassionate approach to religion and the removal of superstition, hypocrisy and sham from our religious practices, Swami Ji laid great stress on the Swadeshi spirit, adherence to our ancient culture, uplift of the so-called depressed classes, removal of untouchability and caste-barriers and the need for a national language.
I am glad to learn that in this book an attempt has been made to collect in a consolidated manner some of the important talks and sermons of Swami Dayanand Saraswati, With the passage of time, most of the things that Swami Ji preached have been accepted by the Hindu society and the initial differences that divided the rest of Hindu society from the Arya Samaj have been more or less resolved. Still there is need for the people to be aware of the teachings of Swami Ji and it is good in that context that this collection has been prepared and is being published.
