It is indeed a great privilege for me to write the Foreword for the book Textbook of Herbal Cosmetics, authored by my protégé Prof (Dr) Vimala Devi, former Head, Department of Pharmaceutical Technology. I had been associated with her since 1959 and I had the privilege of observing her keen interest in herbal and phytochemistry. As at that time we were under the umbrella of distinguished Prof S Rangaswamy, a legendary figure who needs no introduction. As such it is indeed laudable that Prof (Dr) Vimala Devi has penned this unique book, keeping in mind that India has a fascinating beauty culture made of traditional natural herbs bestowed with special health benefits and that India has a huge population of approximately 1.2 billion people awaiting access to cosmetics and cleansing products. Due to more and more Indian females becoming economically self-sufficient and professional, about 150 million of customers are now having access to cosmetic products. Not only that, today's males also want to be well groomed and wish to appear handsome. Foreigners are becoming more and more interested in 'Made in India' herbal cosmetics. India is emerging as one of the most dynamic herbal cosmetic manufacturing country internationally. Thus, this book will be of immense interest not only to the students of pharmacy, cosmetology, and R&D workers but also of cosmetic manufacturers. Manufacturers are investing huge sums of money on R&D to design their products, keeping in mind the ethos of the middle class consumer's psychological orientation towards the beautification properties and usefulness of herbal ingredients which are safe and efficacious. The chapter on baby care products, body care products, hair care products, dental care and oral hygiene products, and also eye care products like kajals would be of tremendous interest to the readers. The Drug and Cosmetics Act, 1940, under Section 3(aaa) has defined cosmetics as any article intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled or sprayed on, or introduced into, or otherwise applied to human body or any part thereof for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance and include any article intended for use as component of cosmetics. Per se the Act has not separately defined herbal cosmetics. However, it may be that a cosmetic base whose standard conformed to the schedule of the Drug and Cosmetic Rules, 1945, or as specified by the Bureau of Indian Standards. It would be wise to accept the specification of the herbal component to identify the quality through the marker compound as given for the various herbal components in the Ayurvedic pharmacopeias or Indian pharmacopeia or any other pharmacopeia of a country recognized by Government of India, Ministry of Health, and Ayush on a reciprocating basis. Further cognizance have been taken of traditional knowledge and art and science of manufacture of herbal cosmetics in consonance with international requirement of the content of heavy metals like lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury. Freedom from untoward side reactions, toxic and allergic manifestations and safety parameters of cosmetics product as laid down by the Bureau of Indian Standards have been taken care of each herb, the pictures of each of cosmetic effective herbs will add a new dimension to the book, which will be of immense help to the readers of this useful book. The book has also taken care while presenting the formulations to built the quality of product during various stages of manufacture and just not tests the final quality of the product, this is the essence of quality assurance. Microbial and oxidative preservation and prevention of oxidative degradation of the formulations are given. I am confident that this book will be a path-breaking original and lucid information resource for anyone interested in herbal cosmetics written by Prof (Dr) Vimala Devi, who has dedicated herself to extensive and intensive original research in this fascinating field of herbal cosmetics. I wish her book all success.
