raghavendra Narayan Singh (born 960) holds a Ph.D. degree in English literature from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. A bilingual author Dr. Singh is a prolific writer whose sixty three books speak of his merit as a writer. He has published his books on poetry, fiction, prose, criticism and pirituality. His major books in English include Shades of Darkness Novel), I will Sing Eternally, An Orchard for life, Shakespeare in India, Dance Draupadi Dance, It's A Mad Mad World, Papa, One Day I Will So (Poetry), Poetry of W.H. Auden (Criticism), Glory Be to God, Book of God (Spirituality). Besides these, his pooks in Hindi include twelve novels, seven collections of short stories and twenty anthologies of poems. Raghavendra Narayan Singh served as Professor of English at S.B. Post-graduate College, Badagaon, Varanasi, India till his superannuation in 2021. The essays collected in this book are my reflections on different aspects of life. A writer lives in the present but he keeps his eyes open both towards the future and the past. His reminiscences often form the contents of his writings and present a fascinating world to the readers. Keeping a close eye on his surroundings he receives the raw material for his essays. His social, political, religious, educational and literary preferences are clearly betrayed in his writings. The present book of essays There was a Panna Lal contains some of my writings posted on the social media. They were written spontaneously as per demand of the hour. The writer of essays has the choice to write on any subject or topic in accordance to his interest. He is privileged in this regard. Not dictated by others, he has full liberty to his readers to express his ideas and feelings in the way he wants to communicate. When Sir Francis Bacon wrote his essays he chose the topics which were mostly of general interest. His essays encompassed the day today activities and engagement of his readers. When he was writing on Truth or Studies or Travels or Death, he had in his mind what his readers needed. He wasn't didactic. His tone was not authoritative. Rather he was just a friend or a guide to the people.
