Tipu Sultan is popularly known as the Tiger of Mysore. It is an epithet given by the Europeans for his love and passion for tigers. There is a mechanical model in London Museum depicting the lion combating with Tipu who represents the tiger. Obviously, the lion represents the mighty colonial power, the English. Tipu Sultan was a terror for the British East India Company but for the indigenous people he was a savior, freedom fighter and a great patriot. This doesn't mean that he was not criticized by the historians. His reign and the administration were subjected to criticism by the historian in positive and negative sense. But the papers presented in the volume bring to us his humanitarian values that he followed in his administration, innovative administrative reforms, and war strategies and so on. In every possible way he used the administrative skills to improve his trade and commerce and to reach as far as possible in bringing the social equation by following the common law for the judgment of crimes. He was ahead of time in modernization and innovative administrative reforms.
Tipu was also aware of the so-called drain of wealth to England as a result of English exploitation of indigenous people in its Indian colonies. In this juncture it is necessary to bring out the history of Tipu Sultan which is unaffected by the prejudice and fanaticism. While going through the papers on Tipu which are included in this volume the above objective is enlightened without any added colour. Thus, the volume provides vivid range of information right from his relevance in the present scenario to that of his contribution to the contemporary art of 18th Century. Apart from this, papers on his administration, numismatics, revenue administration, the political scenario of South India in 18th century, are the highlights of this volume. Veteran and well-known history scholars in their respective field have contributed the papers in the light of their research, experience and knowledge. There are some papers which enlighten us about his personal life as well as public life. No ruler of this period understood or attempted to change the state from feudalism to modernism. I have no doubt that this volume will be welcomed by all the lovers of history. This will help the scholars and the layman in understanding and appreciating the great history of Tipu Sultan.
I congratulate Dr. R. Gopal, the editor of this volume and the Director of Archaeology and Museums for selecting eminent group of scholars who present their papers in the Conference and the same has been edited by him and made available to all the lovers of history. Hope this volume will be well received by the readers and scholars.
