Book Description
About the Book
Ubhaya Bharati is a historical play that revolves around the renowned scholar-debater Saraswati, who bears the title Ubhaya Bharati, and her erudite husband Vishwarupa, also known as Mandana Mishra. The play portrays their conjugal life, imbued with lyrical beauty, but punctuated by several dramatic episodes of conflict between the ancient Vedic religion and Buddhism. The play leads up to its climax in the form of the famous philosophical debate between Mandana Mishra and Adi Shankaracharya, with Ubhaya Bharati, who was considered as the very incarnation of the Goddess Saraswati, acting as the impartial arbiter. The play is an extraordinary blend of deep scholarship, dramatic plots, and skilful stagecraft of the highest order.

Preface
It is with great pleasure and reverence that we are bringing out this publication, Ubhaya Bharati, on this very auspicious occasion of the Platinum Jubilee of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and the 125th Birth Anniversary of Kulapati Dr. K. M. Munshiji, the founder of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Over the years, Bhavan's Gandhi Centre for Science and Human Values has published, both in English and Kannada, a number of books related to a variety of subjects, such as history, philosophy, biography, and science. A few of these books discuss certain aspects of Sanskrit and Kannada literature as well. Now, for the first time, Gandhi Centre is publishing an actual literary work, that too a play, in its original Kannada version and its English translation. The historical play, Ubhaya Bharati, focuses on the life of the great scholar-debater Saraswati, who bears the title Ubhaya Bharati, and her husband Mandana Mishra, and their interaction with Adi Shankaracharya. This lofty and thought-provoking work has been written by the celebrated author of the last century, C. K. Venkata Ramayya. C. K.
