A Hindu, who had bought land years ago from a Muslim, discovers while ploughing the field a pot of gold buried underneath. The Hindu wants to return the gold because he says that he had bought only the land, not the gold buried in it. The Muslim does not want to take the gold because he had sold the land along with everything there was in it. Neither of them wants to keep the gold for fear of going to hell for the sin of taking something that does not belong to him. The arguments evolve into a dispute that lands both of them in jail. Shri Surendranath Jauhar, popularly called Chacha-ji (uncle), was born in 1903 in Vahalee, a village in that part of the Punjab which is now in Pakistan. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, he entered the freedom struggle at the age of 18, and stayed with it till the country became independent in 1947. While on a tour of the country in 1939, he made an 'unplanned visit to Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry, which gave a new direction to his life. A master story teller, Whose Gold: Yours, Not Mine is one of the most inspiring tales narrated by him.
Most of the illustrations have been done by Sarita Jaiswal. Sarita is a budding artist who has done her graduate and postgraduate studies in art from the prestigious College of Art, Delhi. She was the recipient of a Sahitya Kala Parishad Scholarship in Visual Arts from the Govt. of Delhi in 2019. Sarita enters the emotions of the characters in the books that she illustrates, and enjoys giving the emotions a vivid expression in her art.
