Introduction
Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's humour is lively, immediate and forthright. He enjoys the essence of it, leaving it to others to experience it in peels of prolonged laughter. Baba's humour is not for homours' sake; it is humour that instructs and enlivens. It is humour that never hurts but blesses all; it is humour that provides both light and delight. Swami never wastes words. Each word, humourous or not, carries an important message. He lets us contemplate His words and understand the seriousness of the underlying message. The words of Bhagawan remove our grief ("sambāšanam sankatanāśanam"). Bhagawan's witty and wise words, soaked in love, give happiness to all of us. His cryptic word play makes us laugh heartily. "SAI's humour is "Divine humour". The purpose is that Swami wants to see us with a smiling face always. He said "Be always happy with a smiling face. Do not put on a "Castrol oil face under any circumstances. Remain smiling all the time." A smile is free and gives a lot. It enriches those who receive it, without making the giver any poorer. It only lasts for seconds but its memory may last forever. Nobody is rich enough to be able to go without it, nor too poor not to give one. A smile creates happiness in the home and is the sure sign of friendship. It gives rest to the one who is tired and courage to even the most discontented. In other words, always "SMILE". To smile at people, only 14 muscles are required whereas to frown 72 muscles are required. Mother Theresa offers a beautiful and simple exercise: "Peace starts with a smile. Therefore, 5 times a day, give a smile to someone you really don't feel like to smile at. Make this gesture for peace. Let us radiate peace," It is said "Laughter is the best medicine" for all ills - both physical and mental. A heartful laughter makes diseases to go away and diffuse any tense situation. Smile and laughter are our birth rights. If we can expand their energy within ourselves, we will expand our joy for miles and miles. It is said, we are not fully dressed unless we wear a smile. So SMILE! Humour is the source of life. Smiling face with smiling eyes - inspires, enthuses and encourages. Humours keep us laughing and smiling. Humour is a divine attribute. There has never been an Avatar or saint, a truly spiritual master lacking in Humour. Swami always uplifts our spirits because He himself is in a constant state of bliss. Most of the time, in group interviews, when men are overawed or overcome by His presence and the literally breath taking aura which surrounds Him, He puts everyone at ease immediately by His Humour or telling remarks which produce laughter and joy. Ego takes a flight and the most self-important person becomes a child at the Mother's knee, that too Divine Mother's Knee.
