About the Book Kuvempu (Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa, 1904-1994) was one of the greatest Kannada writers of 20th century. He led a generation of Kannada people into the new era through his writings. He was a cultural icon.

Though he was decorated with many national awards, his writings remain largely unknown to readers in other Indian languages. We wanted to introduce the brilliance of Kuvempu's works to readers of other Indian languages. So we selected five of his seminal essays and took on the responsibility of translating them into other Indian languages. These essays reflect his views on the conflict between tradition and modernism. Though the context is rooted in Karnataka and Kannada, the views expressed have universal appeal and remain relevant to this day.
