The peacock, which is a symbol of eternity, is used in many Mithila (Madhubani) paintings. Most often they are part of one but it forms the main theme in this one. Trees are often ritual sites - symbols of reproduction. On one such tree is perched a peacock resplendent in colour and design. Its body, neck downwards, is a geometric tiled pattern. In the middle is a circular design with a lotus in the centre. The end feathers are again rectangular, ending with a twin coloured frill. The rest of the peacock's body is royal blue in colour. It's pecking at a fruit off the fruit laden tree that has umpteen branches and colourful fruits. The trunk of the tree is also decorated by the Maithila artist. The pebbles around the tree look more like boulders, going by the size of them.
The wonderful flights of imagination and innovative skill of the artist can be discovered through an examination of a painting such as this.
