Some of the earlier sun myths attempted to explain the phenomena of the sunrise and the sunset. When the sun disappeared each night, the sun god sank into the abode of the dead, and the ancients feared for the fate of the world. Because the sun did rise to life each morning, the sun god was a cosmic hero. He battled the demons of death and darkness and he won. Sun gods all over the world fought similar battles, battles not only against darkness demons but also against the stormclouds that blocked the light and the numerous forces of evil that stood in opposition to sun and light and goodness.
The basic shape of this amuletic necklace is circular. The symmetry of the whole composition is enhanced by the inscribed inner circle and the sun god himself resplendent at the center. The twelve rays here are symbolically important. Twelve is the base number space and time in ancient astronomy, astrology, and calenderic science, the sun formed an essential part of which beliefs. It denotes cycles of times (the 12 calendar months, the twelve hours of day and night).
