About The Artiste

Mehdi Hassan the legendary Pakistani Ghazal/playback singer is believed to be the undisputed King of Ghazals and has accordingly been titled Shehnshah-e-Ghazal. He has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions including the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (Pakistan), the Pride of Performance (Pakistan), the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Pakistan), the Saigal Award (India), the Gorkha Dakshan Bahu Award (Nepal) and many more across the world!

He was born in the village of Luna in Jhunjhunu district in Rajasthan, India in 1927 into a Shia Muslim family of rich traditional musicians. He claims to be the 16th generation of hereditary musicians hailing from the Kalawant. From the age of 8, he received his musical training under his father, Ustad Azeem Khan and his uncle Ustad Ismail Khan who were classical musicians, well-versed in the dhrupad style of singing.

After moving to Pakistan post partition, Mehdi Hassan was given the opportunity to sing on Radio Pakistan in 1952, primarily as a thumri singer, which earned him recognition within the musical fraternity. His passion for Urdu poetry made him experiment with singing ghazals and very soon his innovative style was appreciated by everyone. The 60s and 70s can be named ‘Mehdi Hassan’s decades’, as there was hardly any protagonist in the Pakistani film fraternity on whom Mehdi Hassan’s songs were not filmed.

Mehdi Hassan is universally acclaimed as the finest ghazal singer of his time. His unsurpassed vocal range and his mastery over even the most difficult of raags makes him the undisputed emperor of ghazals. His popularity and mass appreciation continued over five decades. Lata Mangeshkar once compared his songs to “the voice of God”.

Following a severe illness in the late 80s, Mehdi Hassan stepped down from playback singing. Later due to severity of his illness the completely departed from music. He now lives a secluded life in Karachi which he has made his permanent residence. Nevertheless he often visits Lahore where he spends most of his time with his children and other family members.
